Training Course in Operative Gynaecological Endoscopy

Course Description

Endoscopic techniques are becoming more and more interesting for gynaecological surgeons, and endoscopic surgery is emerging as the gold-standard approach compared to open surgery. Every surgeon practicing today needs to understand the principles and fundamentals of endoscopic surgery in Gynaecology and avoid compromises and complications. However, analysing surveys in most African countries, the rate of minimally invasive approaches in major procedures rarely exceeds 4% compared to 20% in European countries. Teaching and training are needed not only to improve these data, but mainly to standardize the surgical techniques and their outcomes.

The course will provide the participants with the required knowledge of laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and psychomotor skills as well as practice the procedure on animal models in order to apply the learned techniques to live surgery. The curriculum of this course features advanced theoretical lectures, live surgeries, instructional videos and an exclusive lab featuring hands-on training on animal models aimed at the acquisition and improvement of the endoscopic techniques for dissection and suturing, learning the different surgical techniques, develop the necessary psychomotor abilities, and become comfortable with the equipment.

Course Objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide the participants with the required knowledge of endoscopy and psychomotor skills as well as practice the procedure on animal models in order to apply the learned techniques to live surgery. Specific objectives include;

  • To provide participants with the basic skills required for appropriate progress in clinical laparoscopic and hysteroscopic practice;
  • To engage participants in two-handed dissection and hand-eye co-ordination;
  • To outline prevention and management of complications of various gynaecological endoscopy procedures; and
  • To practice on live tissue in order to give participants the technical capacity to improve their skills.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the fundamentals of diagnostic hysteroscopy and laparoscopy including preoperative diagnostics, problems and complications, action to be taken when complications occur;
  • Describe effective operating room set-up for laparoscopy and hysteroscopy;
  • Describe patient positioning and trocar-placement for laparoscopic and hysteroscopic gynaecologic procedures;
  • Acquire the fundamental techniques in laparoscopic procedures in diagnostic laparoscopy, sterilization, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, salpingectomy and adnexectomy
  • Have working knowledge to perform Hysteroscopic Myomectomy and Endometrial resection
  • Predict, manage and prevent complications, including ureter, bladder and bowel injuries in laparoscopic surgery; and
  • Apply the skills necessary to perform laparoscopic hysterectomy, myomectomy and pelvic reconstructive surgery while minimizing conversions.

Target Audience

This hands-on training on essential gynaecological endoscopy procedures has been designed to meet the educational needs of practicing obstetricians/gynaecologists or general surgeons or experienced senior medical officers or residents/fellows with prior experience or training in the performance of abdomino-pelvic surgery.

Course Duration

This 3-day intensive and interactive hands-on training course offers advanced lectures complemented by video sessions, hands-on activities and discussion with experts.

Teaching Format

  1. Didactic theoretical lectures
  2. Interactive group discussion with experts.
  3. Practical training on live tissue (mini-pigs)
    • During hands-on session, participants will be divided into small groups to practice surgical techniques on anaesthetised animals.
  4. Live video demonstration of actual Surgery.
