Assisted Reproduction Technologies (ART) Laboratory Set-Up and Management

Course Description

The emergence of several new assisted reproduction techniques in recent years and new advances in biomedical knowledge of events in reproduction processes make it evident that there is a need to create permanent continuing education programmes for professionals in the field of human Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

The course will provide participants with the core knowledge to set up, maintain and control an optimal ART laboratory. Participants will learn about key considerations in the design of a new laboratory or re-build of an existing one using the latest know-how – from planning (space design and future needs) to selection of construction materials (building materials, decision on ventilation system), laboratory furniture, equipment, and disposables.

Course objectives

This course is designed to:

  • Enable participants learn about the optimal design and layout of a modern ART laboratory.
  • Understand how to select equipment, chemicals and disposables, and storage of consumables.
  • Learn how to develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Key performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Learn about quality control, management, and quality assurance

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of design and layout of a modern ART Lab.
  2. Explain the start-up equipment, reagents, and consumables.
  3. Explain the process of monitoring and quality management of the laboratory activities.
  4. Demonstrate a practical understanding of handling of equipment and consumables.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of key factors require for setting up a state-of-the-art ART lab
